My love for lanterns stem from my childhood memories. Lanterns are an integral part of that memory because we lived in a house in a small town in Kerala, this place had no electricity at that time, but we never ever actually felt the lack of it.  The dim light of the rustic lantern which we kept on the ‘poomukham’ (or raised verandah in English) shall remain fresh in my memory forever.

We studied under that light, we prayed and played pranks on each other under that light.  Those lanterns and the luminous light emanating from it was witness to some of  the bestest years of my life.   These are some images which I heart, including the header of my blog,  also I have a small collection of miniature lanterns with me.

This mini post is dedicated to my love for lanterns.

  1. Aha! You truly love these lanterns. I had to scroll up and see your header again! Recently, I saw this type of lantern in a restaurant. They had bulbs in it and it kind of looked chic!

  4. Wow that was such a nostalgic post, Rekha! Its amazing how the most ordinary of things can have a lasting impact on your life.

I remember using lanterns while growing up in Delhi too..the ones which you have pump gas in every time you needed the flames brighter. They used to burn my eyes so much!

But nowadays lanterns are more used as decorative pieces no..they look so beautiful!

  5. Reminds me i love lanterns too. I remember telling you that your blog picture of the lantern looks good. In fact the front porch of our house has a lantern lamp, just that instead of a fire flickering, there is an electric bulb. I also had a small kerosene lantern i had picked from pune which was in working condition, need to check where it is.
